IU East Men's Athlete of the Year: Jake Miller

91

Jake Miller is a model of consistency, which is likely one the reasons he has been selected as the Indiana University East Men's Athlete of the Year for the second straight time in 2021-22.

"It's definitely an honor to win this award for the second year in a row," Miller said. "I had three main goals this year, which was to get a win, have a team win and get to the national championship."

Miller was also named the River States Conference Golfer of the Year as the Red Wolves finished with the team runner-up plaque at the conference meet in April.

"As good of a golfer as Jake is, his strongest attribute is his consistency," IU East coach Jeff Williams said. "The competition we play all have guys capable of that really good round or even a hot tourney or two, but Jake puts himself in the hunt every time he tees it up. He's just a phenomenal college golfer."

The fourth IU East golfer to win the RSC Player of the Year award, Miller finished second at the conference tournament for the second year in a row. He also earned the RSC Player of the Week award five times this year with three of the honors coming in the spring.

"I reached two of my goals, which is a good thing," Miller said. "Overall, the team did well. We wanted to reach the national championship and we fought hard at the conference tournament, but we ran into a very good Midway University team."

In his final event of the year, Miller was the medalist at the WVU Tech Golden Bear Classic as he won on the second hole of a sudden-death playoff after with 36-hole score of 147.

"Definitely the best moment of the season was our end of the year trip to West Virginia," Miller said. "It was a good send off for the seniors and I ended up getting an individual win out of it too."

It was his fourth individual title of 2021-22.

"I'm definitely looking forward for next season with a main goal of winning the national championship, which I know I can do and just need the timing to be right," said Miller, who is business administration major. "I just practice a lot and really focus during the season and off-season to get my game to a competitive level at all times. There's definitely a lot of things that I need to improve on for next season, which I plan on working on this summer."

Miller's three other individual victories were at the Quaker Fall Kick off hosted by Earlham College, the IU East Fall Invitational and the IU Kokomo Fall Invitational.
